for Messrs. Fraser of Manchester and used the well known "chop"

for a certain class of piece goods, viz:- "Fox & Duck" which

is considered by the Chinese to be a German shop. This material

is similar to, and manufactured by, the same firm that makes

the *Eagle and Peach" chop sold by a leading British firm in

Hongkong, with which it is in keen competition. It is now

understood that Mr. Webb will act as Agent for the "Fox & Duck"

shop.

Mr. E. Norton Bell, an Engineer, formerly worked under

Arnhold Karberg & Co. in Canton, their name appearing under him

on his office board. His name now stands as 1. Norton Bell and

underneath E.E. Arnhold.

Mr. Bell recently called on a British resident in Canton

to complain that this gentleman had put about a report that

Mr. Arnhold was a German and on his behalf threatened legal

prooeedings for libel. The British resident denied the charge.

As a matter of fact Mr. Arnhold's office in Canton is

Messrs. Arnhold Harberg' & Co.'s old office and the German staff

have been retained, The present manager is Hr. A. Fathonsolm, a

German who was formerly silk inspector for Arnhold Karberg & Co.

7. Blackhead & Co. did a large business as shipchandlers and

general storekeepers. Their stock is now being gradually dis-

posed of by the liquidators as opportunity offers.

This is not unnaturally much resented by the British

shipehandling firms. Blackhead's firm own considerable property

in Hongkong, which the liquidators are not permitted to deal

with.

shipohandlers, stock was disposed of very

shortly by the liquidators to the Java, China & Japan Line.

C. Bodiker & Co. were Commission Agents on a large scale and

did a very good business,. They were largely interested in Test

Afries and consequently are unlikely to be able to resume busi-

ness after the War.
